Have you ever felt that you were less than enthusiastic at work? Or that you just didn’t have the energy to complete your work at the pace you would like? Are you an employer that is noticing a lack of morale around the workplace? A common cliche for these dull moments is to say to a friend, “I need a vacation.” Well as it turns out, it may be just that simple. Recent surveys and studies by Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) illustrate the importance of vacation time on efficiency and productivity during work hour

SHRM is the world’s largest Human Resources management association in the world. For the purposes of the aforementioned study, SHRM randomly selected 481 of their 250,000 members of HR professionals to participate. The participants were all U.S. based, and the study took place from August 22nd – September 25th, 2013.

The results of the study were eye-opening! Employees who took vacations showed higher levels of productivity, increased morale, and improved job satisfaction. Of those supervisors interviewed, 77% believed that their employees who take vacation time are more productive than those who do not, and 90% of participants felt that utilizing vacation time across the organization led to a happier workplace.

These findings are important for both employers and employees to take into account. As employers, it is important to create an atmosphere and benefits system that encourages vacation time. As an employee, it is in your best interest to make sure you use your vacation days and use them wisely.

If conducted correctly, added vacation time can serve as a perk for the employer as well as the employee. Employees will feel that they are given added perks when they are given time off, and their increased creativity and effectiveness upon returning will create a better workplace and results for the employer, which should serve as a motivation for them as well.

The fact is, most American employees do not use all of their vacation days. According to the study by SHRM, 61 percent of American employees have three or more vacations days left over at year’s end. In an attempt to encourage employees to use these days, 70% of organizations polled have policies that prohibit employees from rolling over unused vacation days. This “use it or lose it” policy is meant to motivate employees to use their vacation days within the calendar year. Companies feel that this helps to retain employees, as they will be happier in their roles.

The issue of the unused vacation days could be attributed to the hesitancy of employees to plan their vacations and pay for them on the fly, and not knowing if their vacation days will allow for their vacation at that time. One of the best ways to handle your own objection and seamlessly plan a great vacation is by opting to purchase or rent a timeshare. Employees who use timeshares will be more likely to use their vacation benefits to the fullest, since it will already be scheduled and paid for up front.
