Marco Island Historical Museum is just two miles from Eagle’s Nest Beach Resort. The museum’s exhibits include information from Calusa Indians to the history and development of Marco Island. Visit the famous Key Marco Cat which has returned to its birthplace, on loan from the Smithsonian until 2021. The Marco Cat is a mysterious six inch tall wooden carving, half cat/ half human, created by either the Calusa Indians or their ancient Muspa ancestors. The statue is thought to be five hundred to a thousand five hundred years old and one of the most precious Pre Columbian Native American pieces of art ever discovered in North America. Other rare artifacts discovered on Marco Island in 1896 are back and on loan from the Smithsonian for a limited time. The Marco Island Historical Museum is fun and educational for all ages and is also handicap accessible. Hours of operation: Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. Admission is free and donations are welcomed. Upcoming special events include “MS Conceptions” now through January 30th, “Mommy and Me” on January 31st and “Pineapple Day” on February 1st.
